الجسر الطبيعي Natural bridge ويطلق علية أيضاً Natural arch قوس الطبيعة جسر كونته الطبيعة. ومن المعروف أن تكوين بعض الجسور يتطلب آلاف السنين. ويتكون الجسر الطبيعي في كثير من الأحيان نتيجة فعل المياه التي تشق طريقها عبر صخور هشة ولينة. فإذا كانت هناك طبقة صخرية وصلبة في قمة الصخرة الهشة، تبقى الطبقة الصلبة ثابتة وتكون جسرا وتتخذ الجسور الطبيعية في أغلب الأحيان شكل القوس.

Sequence of arch formation

• تصدعات عميقة تخترق طبقة من الحجر الرملي.

1. Erosion wears away exposed rock layers and enlarges the surface cracks, isolating narrow sandstone walls, or fins.
2. Alternating frosts and thawing cause crumbling and flaking of the porous sandstone and eventually cut through some of the fins.
3. The resulting holes become enlarged to arch proportions by rockfalls and weathering. Arches eventually collapse, leaving only buttresses that in time will erode.

A topographic map of Coyote Natural Bridge in Utah, USA shows how the meandering Coyote Gulch carved a shorter route through the rock under the arch. The old riverbed is now higher than the present water level.
