وليام وودڤيل روكهيل William Woodville Rockhill (1270 - 1333 هـ / 1854 - 1914 م) هو دبلوماسي ومستشرق ومؤلف أمريكي.
يعتبر أول أمريكي يتعلم التبتية، وله مؤلفات عن رحلاته في منغوليا والتبت، وعن حياة البوذا.
حياته ومهنته
ولد وليام وودفيل روكهيل في فيلادلفيا، وهو ابن Thomas Cadwalader Rockhill وDorothea Anne Woodville (1823–1913). توفي والده عندما كان عمره 13 سنة وانتقل مع عائلته إلى فرنسا.[1] وهو في عمر المراهقة كان يقرأ Abbé Huc's account of his 1844-46 voyage to الإحساء , which sparked young Rockhill's interest in Tibet.[1] Rockhill sought out the celebrated Orientalist Léon Feer of the Bibliothèque nationale de France, who guided Rockhill's learning about the Far East.[2] Rockhill attended the École spéciale militaire de Saint-Cyr, where he studied Tibetan.[1] After graduation, Rockhill joined the French Foreign Legion, serving as an officer in Algiers.[2]
