The aircraft involved was an eleven-year-old Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner registered as VT-ANB with serial number 36279.[9][10] The aircraft was delivered new to the airline in January 2014.[11] It was powered by two General Electric GEnx-1B67 engines.[12]

This is the first fatal crash and the first hull loss involving a Boeing 787 since its introduction in 2011,[13] and Air India's first major hull loss[أ] since the bombing of Air India Flight 182 in 1985.[15]

Air India began running routes from Gatwick in 2013, and at the time of the crash had twelve departures a week from the airport, five to Ahmedabad.[5]

الركاب والطاقم

The flight was carrying 242 people: 230 passengers, including 11 children and 2 infants, along with 2 pilots and 10 flight attendants, according to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and Air India.[16][17]

The passenger manifest included 169 Indian, 53 British, 7 Portuguese, and 1 Canadian national.[18] Among the passengers was Vijay Rupani, the former Chief Minister of Gujarat.[19]

The flight was commanded by Captain Sumeet Sabharwal and First officer Clive Kundar.[20]

Flight 171 took off from runway 23 of Ahmedabad Airport at 13:38 local time (IST; 08:08 UTC) en route to London Gatwick. According to METAR reports, the weather and visibility were stable.[5]

The ADS-B transponder of the aircraft reported an altitude of 625 أقدام (191 m) before reception was lost at 08:08:50 UTC at around 230 feet (70 m) before the threshold of runway 05. The flight crew issued a mayday call to air traffic control in Ahmedabad.[5]

The crash happened during the aircraft's initial climbout. According to aviation expert Geoffrey Thomas, the aircraft's landing gear was never retracted, but its flaps were already retracted by the time it crashed, approximately 30 seconds after takeoff.[21] A video of the incident showed the aircraft reaching an altitude approximately the equivalent of its wingspan, before gradually descending and crashing in a plume of fire and smoke.[22] The unusual position of the flaps was noted by other experts as well.[23] The wings of the aircraft remained approximately level throughout the flight; no sudden variations in motion were apparent before it descended out of view parallel to the ground.[بحاجة لمصدر]

Eyewitnesses from the Meghani Nagar area reported hearing multiple explosions, followed by thick plumes of smoke visible from nearby locations as the aircraft hit a building and slid.[24] The plane crashed into a medical student's hostel building and super speciality resident doctors quarters of B.J. Medical College located in Civil Hospital campus.[5][25] The aircraft's partially intact stabilizers and tail cone rested on top of a multi-storey building after the accident.[26]

At least seven fire engines and multiple ambulances rushed to the scene of the crash.[27] The Ahmedabad Fire and Emergency Services Department confirmed the deployment of units from various city divisions. All roads leading to the crash site and surrounding areas were closed to facilitate rescue operations.[28]

The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), responsible for security at Ahmedabad Airport, was among the first responders. CISF personnel worked in co-ordination with local authorities and other emergency services to secure the area, assist survivors, and manage the scene.[29]

The Indian Army was also deployed to assist in clearing debris and treating the injured. A military hospital was put on standby to assist efforts.[30]

Shortly after the crash, all flight operations at Ahmedabad Airport were suspended[31] before resuming later in the day with a limited capacity.[22]

الضحايا

According to police, over 240 people died including those on the ground.[32] A 40-year-old British national was confirmed to be the sole survivor after escaping.[33][34][35][36] The survivor had been in seat 11A, next to an emergency exit.[37]

Among the dead was Vijay Rupani, who was the Chief Minister of Gujarat from 2016 to 2021.[38][39]

At least 50 medical students in a hostel hit by the aircraft were hospitalised, and 41 people were injured.[5][40] 75 bodies were recovered from the hostel.[36]

التحقيق

The crash is under investigation by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) of India.[41] The United Kingdom's Air Accidents Investigation Branch[42] and the US National Transportation Safety Board each sent a team to assist with the investigation.[43][27][44][45]

India's aviation authority DGCA and Air India also launched investigations into the crash.[46]

US aerospace safety consultant Anthony Brickhouse, commenting on videos of the aircraft, said one problematic sign was that the landing gear was extended when it would typically have been retracted.[32]

Air India chairman Natarajan Chandrasekaran said that Flight 171 was involved in a "tragic accident" and expressed "deepest condolences" to those affected. He said the airline's focus is on supporting victims and their families, assisting emergency teams, and providing verified updates. He also said that investigations of the accident will take some time to being solved.[58] Air India Flight 143, a 787-8 similar to the crashed aircraft, flying from New Delhi to Paris Charles De Gaulle with Campbell, diverted back to New Delhi for him to assist the airline with the crisis.[59]
