في 7 أغسطس 2015، أكدت مصادر دبلوماسية فرنسية أن الرئيس أولاند قد ناشق الموضوع مع الرئيس المصري عبد الفتاح السيسي أثناء زيارته لمصر عند افتتاح قناة السويس الجديدة في مدينة الإسماعيلية.[5][6] توصلت مصر وفرنسا لصفقة لشراء حاملتي مروحيات روسية سابقة طراز ميسترال مقابل 940 مليون يورو، وتشمل تكاليف تدريب الطاقم المصري.[7][8] في حديثه لراديو مونت كارلو، صرح وزير الدفاع الفرنسي جان إيڤ لو داريان أن مصر قد دفعت بالفعل ثمن حاملتي الطائرات بالكامل.[9] كما اشترت مصر مروحيات روسية من المخطط أن تستخدم على حاملتي الطائرات ميسترال.
